Protecting Horseshoe Crab Habitat

چکیده
Each spring adult horseshoe crabs migrate from deep bay waters and the Atlantic continental shelf to intertidal sandy beaches to spawn. Horseshoe crabs are an important food source for migrating shorebirds that feed on the eggs, for migrating fish that feed on the eggs and larvae and for Atlantic loggerhead turtles that feed on horseshoe crabs while using the Chesapeake Bay as a summer nursery area. In addition, horseshoe crabs are critical to the biomedical industry that uses their blood. A chemical obtained from horseshoe crab blood (Limulus amebocyte lysate or LAL) is used to determine the safety of medical products for human use. Horseshoe crabs are slow to mature and can be easily harvested during the spawning season. As such, they may be susceptible to overharvest. Horseshoe crab harvesting for bait in other fisheries such as American eel and conch as well as evidence of localized population declines occurring within Delaware Bay in the late 1990’s raised concerns about the status of horseshoe crabs. As a result, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) developed an interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) to conserve and protect the horseshoe crab resource. Since the plan’s approval in 1998, states have implemented mandatory reporting of horseshoe crab landings, reduced harvest of horseshoe crabs, initiated long-term monitoring programs necessary for stock status information, and made progress in identifying important horseshoe crab habitat. This article focuses on the progress made by Atlantic states in identifying important spawning and nursery habitat of horseshoe crabs.

Sediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus
Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...
متن کاملDeath rate due to horseshoe crab poisoning: summarization on Thai reports
Problem from eating poisonous seafood can be seen in marine medicine[1-3]. Several marine animals can be toxic. The good examples are fishes[4], mussels[5] and shellfishes[6,7]. Horseshoe crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) can be poisonous and intoxication due to intake is possible[8]. Horseshoe crab poisoning can be seen in many countries with seacoasts including China and Thailand. In animal...
متن کاملThe Effects of Water Quality on Horseshoe Crab Embryos and Larvae
It is well established that horseshoe crab eggs can develop successfully across a wide range of temperatures and salinities. However, many estuaries in which horseshoe crabs spawn have been heavily impacted by pollutants, and degraded water quality may be affecting the survival of horseshoe crab eggs laid in such areas. Laboratory bioassays using Limulus polyphemus embryos and larvae have shown...
متن کاملIntertidal rack-and-bag oyster farms have limited interaction with horseshoe crab activity in New Jersey, USA
Concern has been raised about the ability of horseshoe crabs Limulus polyphemus to traverse intertidal rack-and-bag oyster farms, and how farms may change shorebird foraging activity. During the 2016 horseshoe crab spawning season, experiments conducted in Delaware Bay (New Jersey, USA) assessed the ability of crabs to move among oyster farms and access landward nesting grounds, and surveyed th...
متن کاملThe Horseshoe Crab, Limulus polyphemus: 200 Million Years of Existence, 100 Years of Study
Management of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is currently surrounded by controversy. The species is considered a multiple-use resource, as it plays an important role as bait in a commercial fishery, as a source of an important biomedical product, as an important food source for multiple species of migratory shorebirds, as well as in several other minor, but important, uses. Concern has...
